Uncompressing a hard disk from MS-DOS
  • If you're running MS-DOS 6.22 or higher, then at the Command Prompt, type drvspace

  • If you have an earlier version, type dblspace

  • Select the drive to uncompress

  • In the Tools menu, click Uncompress

Using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
  • In the source computer, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

  • Click the Old computer radio button, then click Next

  • Choose the transfer method, then click Next

  • Choose the type of information to transfer, then click Next

  • Click Finish

  • In the destination computer, navigate to the Files and Transfer Settings Wizard

  • Click the New Computer radio button, then click Next

  • Click the radio button that indicates you have already collected your data, then click Next

  • Specify the location of your data, then click Next

  • Click Finish

Beginning installation from the CD-ROM from a previous version of Windows

  • Insert the Windows XP Professional CD-ROM into your CD-ROM or DVD drive

  • Click Install Windows XP

  • In the Windows XP Setup Welcome screen, click the appropriate radio button to indicate whether you're upgrading or doing a clean install

  • Click Next

Beginning installation without a previous version of Windows

  • Turn off your computer

  • If you can boot from your CD-ROM drive, insert the Windows XP Professional CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive

  • If you cannot boot from your CD-ROM drive, insert the Windows XP Setup Boot Disk 1 into your floppy disk drive

  • Power up your computer

Beginning installation from a shared network folder

  • Obtain the path to the setup folder

  • If you're installing from Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT, run the program winnt32 from the setup folder

  • If you're installing from Windows 3.1 or some other operating system, run the program winnt from the setup folder

Setting license, partition, and file system information
  • In the License Agreement dialog box, click I accept this agreement, then click Next

  • In the Your Product Key dialog box, type the product key, then click Next

  • In the Special Options dialog box, if you want to select a partition during installation, click Advanced Options

  • In the Advanced Options dialog box, check I want to choose the installation partition during setup, then click OK

  • In the Special Options dialog box, click Next

  • After the computer restarts, if asked, select the partition on which to install Windows XP, then press Enter

  • If prompted, indicate whether to convert the file system to NTFS, then press Enter
