Glossary

Restore Down button: Replaces the Maximize button when a window is full screen. Restores a window to the size it was before it was maximized.

Restore point: An earlier time when the computer was not experiencing the current problems.

Restoring: The opposite of backing up; this process takes files on your backup and copies them back onto the hard drive.

Right indent: How far from the right margin to position a paragraph.

Right justified: Text aligned along the right margin, with the left edge left ragged.

Right-click: To press the right button of the mouse once over an object. Displays a context menu for that object.

Roll Back Driver: The function of reverting back to the previous version of the driver for the selected device.

Router: A device that forwards data from one network to another.

Safe Mode: A basic, minimal configuration of your operating system used for troubleshooting.

Sans serif: A font that lacks the embellishments of serif fonts. These fonts are best for headlines and titles because they are not as easy to read in text. Arial is an example of a sans serif font.

Save as: To create a copy of the current file under another name or in another location.

Save: To preserve the contents of a file in the computer.

Scheme: A collection of related properties to assign to the Desktop, mouse, or sounds.

Scrap: A bit of data that you can select and drag onto your Desktop.

Screen capture: An image of the current contents of the computer screen.

Screen saver: A picture or animation that displays on the screen after the computer has been inactive for a specified amount of time.

Security: The protection of data against unauthorized access.

Serif: Fonts that employ small lines to finish off a main stroke at the tops and bottoms of any straight lines in order to make reading easier. Times is an example of a serif font.

Server: A computer that responds to the request from a client with the desired data or service.

Service pack: A bundle of updates.

Shortcut: A link to a file, folder, program, or device. Usually placed on the Desktop for easy access.

Shortcut key: Text to the right of a menu option, such as Ctrl+C. Indicates a key or combination of keys that will perform that option.
