Glossary

Password: A secret word or code used as a security measure against unauthorized access to data and resources.

Password:  A secret word or code used to protect access to a computer.

Peer-to-Peer network: Two or more computers linked together, sharing resources such as a printer, scanner, or Internet connection, and storing files and programs on their own hard drive.

Permission: A rule associated with an object that determines which users or groups have access and abilities to that object.

PING: A command line prompt that tests whether you can send a signal over the network and reach another computer.

Playlist: The list of tracks on an audio CD. Includes the default order in which to play the tracks.

Plug and Play: A set of specifications that allows a computer to automatically detect and configure a device and install the appropriate drivers.

Points: The way font size is measured. There are 72 points to an inch; the higher the point number, the bigger the font.

Port: A number assigned to an application; packets can be blocked or allowed by a firewall based on the port number.

Primary domain controller; backup domain controller: A server that holds the security information for a domain.

Primary partition: The first division of a hard disk drive.

Print: To create a paper version of a file.

Print driver: Software that allows your computer to communicate with a printer.

Print queue: Disk space that forms a waiting line for output designated for a printer until the printer can receive it.

Program: A set of instructions to the computer.

Protocol: A language, or a set of rules, that determines how computers communicate with each other; a method for transmitting data over a network that allows different types of computers to communicate with each other.

Quick Launch bar: Next to the Start menu on the taskbar. Contains icons used to open commonly used programs.

Registry: A database of configuration settings in Windows.

Removable media: Any portable disks of various kindsfloppy disks, CDs, Zip disks, tape drives, DVDs, and the like.

Resize area: At the bottom right of a window. Users click and drag the Resize area to change the size of a window.

Resolution: The number of dots printed per inch on a page. Sharper; more detailed images have a higher resolution. Lower resolution prints quickly.

Resolution: The number of pixels per inch horizontally and vertically.

Resource: Any device that can be used by the members of the network.

Resource Kit: A collection of information and tools for setting up and maintaining a Windows XP environment.
