Desktop:
A button

that minimizes all open windows.

ShowSounds:
Option
to replace sounds played by programs with visual
cues.

SoundSentry:
Option
to replace system sounds with visual cues.

Spooling:
The
process your operating system performs of sending
small bits of a print job at a time to the printer
so that you can perform another task on your
computer while the printer prints your documents.

Stand-alone computer:
A
computer that is not permanently connected a
network.
|
Start
menu:
At the
far left of the taskbar. Provides access to programs
and files. Also provides access to the shut down
function.

StickyKeys:
Option
that saves users from having to press certain keys
simultaneously to perform functions.

Streaming media:
Continuous sound or video on the Web, such as a live
concert or sporting event, which can be heard or
viewed using Windows Media Player.

Switch:
Similar
to a hub but provides more intelligent though
limited routing capabilities.

System requirements:
The
required configuration of a computer to run
software.

Tab
stop:
A
stopping point in a line. Can be used to line up
text columns.

Task
Manager:
A tool
for diagnosing and managing system problems.
|
Taskbar:
The bar
across the bottom of the Windows Desktop. It
contains the Start menu, Quick Launch bar, and
buttons representing open windows.

TCP/IP:
A
protocol that allows computers with totally
different architectures to talk to one another; it
is also the common language of the Internet.

Text
editor:
Application
used to edit plain text files. Does not allow
formatting. Notepad is an example of a text editor.

Text
search:
Using
the Search command to locate a file that contains a
particular word or phrase.
|
Tile:
To
repeat an image over and over (like tiles on a
floor) to fill the background.
|
Title
bar:
Runs
across the top of a window or dialog box. Contains
the name of the window or dialog box, plus buttons
for resizing windows and closing both windows and
dialog boxes.

ToggleKeys:
Option
to play a sound whenever the user presses the Caps
Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock keys.
|
Toolbar:
A row of
buttons near the top of a window and on the taskbar.
Provides quick access to functions.
|
ToolTip:
Displays
when the mouse passes over a Toolbar button.
Provides a hint to the button's function.
|
TRACERT:
A
command line prompt that tells you which links can
be successfully established and which links are
problematic.
