Searching for a computer
  • Open My Network Places

  • Click Search

  • Type the name of the computer you want to find

  • Click the Search button

  • Double-click the found computer name in the Search Results—Computers pane to view the folders and other resources available on the selected machine

Changing the identity of a computer on a network
  • Click Start, then click Control Panel

  • Double-click System, then click the Computer Name tab

  • Click the Change button

  • Indicate whether you want to join a domain or a workgroup, and indicate the name of the domain or workgroup you want to join

  • If you chose to join a domain, type the name and password of an account with permission to join the domain. Click OK

  • Click OK through the next four dialog boxes; then click Yes to reboot

Installing a network protocol

  • Click Start, then click Control Panel

  • Double-click Network Connections

  • Click the icon for the connection for which you want to add a protocol; click File, then click Properties

  • Click Install

  • Click Protocol, then the Add button

  • Click the protocol you want to install, then click OK

Determining your network interface settings

  • Click Start, then click Control Panel

  • Double-click Network Connections

  • Click Local Area Connection, and then click File, then Properties

  • Double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

  • Click the radio button next to Obtain an IP address automatically to have the IP address set by a DHCP server

  • Click the radio button next to Use the following IP address and enter an address in the text boxes below

  • Click the radio button next to Obtain DNS Server address automatically to get your network servers to provide the DNS server address

  • Alternately, click the radio button next to Use the following DNS server address, and enter the address in the text boxes below; then click OK
