Displaying System Information
  • Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information

  • Click the System Summary folder in the left pane to display general information

  • Click the plus sign (+) next to a category name to expand the list, then click the specific item about which you want to view more details

Using the IPCONFIG command to check your TCP/IP settings
  • Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt

  • Type ipconfig, then press Enter

Using the PING command to test connectivity

  • Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt

  • Type ping x.x.x.x, where x.x.x.x is the IP address of a remote computer, then press Enter

  • If you receive a response, this means the connection between your computer and the remote one is good

Using the TRACERT command

  • Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt

  • Type TRACERT x.x.x.x, where x.x.x.x is the IP address of a remote computer (or type TRACERT name, where name is the destination domain name), then press Enter

Displaying the Registry

  • In the Start menu, click Run

  • Type regedit in the Open text box, then click OK

  • Click the plus sign (+) next to a key to expand it and display the contents

  • Click an item to display its values

Backing up the Registry
  • Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup

  • In the Welcome to Backup or Restore Wizard screen, click the Advanced Mode link, then click Next

  • Click the Only back up the System State data radio button, then click Next

Restoring the Registry
  • Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup

  • In the Welcome to Backup or Restore Wizard screen, click the Advanced Mode link, then click Next

  • Click the Restore Wizard radio button, then click Next

  • Make sure the disk that contains your backup file is inserted in the drive

  • Click the Browse button and navigate to the backup file on the disk

  • Choose to restore the entire System state, not just the Registry, then click the Start restore button

  • Answer the prompts in the dialog boxes, then click Finish

Searching the Registry
  • In the Registry, click Edit, then Find

  • In the Find dialog box, type the text you wish to find

  • Narrow your search by clicking in the check boxes marked Keys, Values, Data, or Match whole string only

  • Click Find Next to begin your search
